The Heart of the Lawgiver

Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent

While we hear sad stories of panic-buying and hoarding by our own fellow citizens, we also hear of uplifting stories of people reaching out in compassion to their neighbors suffering the most in these difficult times. These times are a test of who we really are. Our thinking and our actions will speak loudly to the world whether or not we truly are who we claim to be, genuine self-sacrificing followers of Jesus Christ or just selfish opportunists and hypocrites looking out for number one.

I saw a meme on social media lamenting “I didn’t quite imagine I’d be giving up this much for Lent.” Some people still seem to view Lent as a time for “giving material things up” for its own sake. And I thought to myself, maybe God wants me to draw closer to his heart, and I needed a wake-up call. Maybe God thought I wasn’t getting his point, that I wasn’t giving up enough to make that happen.

This mass was offered for the repose of +Haydee Clark.
